Smell Training Exercise
Start smell training by popping off the top of the vial, place near nose, inhale gently and freely the scent 2-5 times.
Once you have sampled the first scent, recap and choose the next. A suggested training program would be repeated daily/minimum 2 times a week over a period of several months.
Smell and Memory
The sense of smell is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses. Those with
full olfactory function may be able to think of smells that evoke particular memories; the scent of an orchard in blossom conjuring up recollections of a childhood picnic, for example. This can often happen spontaneously, with a smell acting as a trigger in recalling a long-forgotten event or experience.
Smell and Emotion
In addition to being the sense most closely linked to memory, smell is also highly emotive. The perfume
industry is built around this connection, with perfumers developing fragrances that seek to convey a vast
array of emotions and feelings; from desire to power, vitality to relaxation.
A number of behavioral studies have demonstrated that smells trigger more vivid emotional memories and are better at inducing that feeling of “being brought back in time” than images. Additional scent marketing research shows that there is a 40% improvement in mood after being exposed to pleasant scents. ... A study by the Sense of Smell Institute indicates that while visual recall of images sinks to approximately 50% after only three months, humans recall smells with 65% accuracy after an entire year.
The olfactory nerve is what manages our sense of smell, and it’s directly linked to the part of the brain that monitors memories and emotions. As such, scent affects mood, concentration, memory recall and emotion. In fact, 75% of all emotions generated every day are due to smell, and because of this, we are 100 times more likely to remember something we smell over something we see, hear or touch. Additional scent marketing research shows that there is a 40% improvement in mood after being exposed to pleasant scents.
